American Tern delivers equipment for Sabre Strike 2010

The M/V American Tern, operated by APL Maritime Ltd. for Military Sealift Command, on Oct. 7 delivered equipment and Stryker vehicles to Riga, Latvia, in preparation for exercise Sabre Strike 2010.

The American Tern loaded in Philadelphia Sept. 16 and 17. Once arriving at the Vecmīlgrāvis Terminal in Riga, the vessel's crew discharged 17 Stryker vehicles and eight containers of gear, weapons, communication equipment, maintenance items, Humvees, trailers and support trucks, MSC reported.

Sealift Logistics Command Europe (SEALOGUER) and Surface Deployment and Distribution Command's (SDDC) 950th Transportation Company coordinated the cargo delivery. The 21-member crew of the Tern operated the vessel's cranes and assisted the stevedores during the eight-hour discharge.

The "crew members of the Tern" were "able to discharge the cargo safely, efficiently and without a scratch in the equipment," said SEALOGUER Maritime Transportation Specialist Matthew Mueller.

The exercise is designed to increase the efficiency of joint operations between three Baltic States and the United States. It is currently being conducted at the Adazi training area in Latvia and will conclude on Oct. 31.

The American Tern is manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers.
