Jobs available, opportunities expected to increase for AMO deck officers with Tankerman PIC DL Endorsement

Jobs are available and demand is expected to increase for AMO deck officers who hold the Tankerman Person-in-Charge Dangerous Liquids Endorsement.

American Maritime Officers members with the PIC DL endorsement should ensure their records are updated with this information in order to take advantage of available and emerging opportunities. To update endorsements on file, AMO members can contact the Training Record System manager by .

AMO is also encouraging members and applicants to complete the process to renew or obtain the Tankerman PIC DL endorsement, and to use the training, online resources and observation programs available through AMO and STAR Center to ease and expedite the process.

For AMO members with a current Tankerman PIC DL endorsement, or an endorsement that has expired within the past one-year period, requirements for renewal of the endorsement include either: proving participation in at least two transfers within the last five years in accordance with §13.127(b), or completion of a U.S. Coast Guard approved course meeting the requirements of 46 CFR13.120.

STAR Center's one-week Tankerman PIC DL (classroom) and the two-week Tankerman PIC DL (simulator) Courses meet the requirements of 46 CFR13.120 for renewal of the endorsement, provided that the tankerman endorsement is current or has not been expired for more than one year. By taking one of these courses, AMO members can renew a tankerman endorsement, even if they do not have recent tanker experience.

AMO members without the Tankerman PIC DL endorsement, and those with an endorsement that has been expired for more than one year, must meet all requirements for an original tankerman endorsement under 46 CFR Part 13. Please note: the U.S. Coast Guard will accept up to 75 percent of the required sea time and transfers that are more than five years old, provided these are properly documented. The Coast Guard has clarified that the tankerman PIC course needed for an endorsement must have been completed within five years of application for the endorsement.

STAR Center provides courses for AMO officers to meet the training requirements for the original endorsement, and AMO has established U.S. and international observation programs for AMO members to complete sea time and cargo transfers required for the endorsement. Details regarding the AMO observation programs are available on the AMO Web site at: www.amo-union.org.

For more information on original tankerman endorsements or renewal of tankerman endorsements, AMO members can contact Director of Member Training and Officer Development Jerry Pannell at (800) 942-3220 ext. 7507 or by .
