New jobs for AMO as Crowley christens Jones Act tanker Florida

Crowley Maritime Corporation Jan. 30 christened the tanker Florida at Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, adding new capacity to the Jones Act fleet and new jobs for the membership of American Maritime Officers. The Florida is the second of two tankers Crowley purchased last year from Aker.

The Florida will soon enter service delivering domestic oil to U.S.-based refineries. The tanker Pennsylvania, which was delivered by Aker in September 2012, is currently operating in the U.S. Gulf. Both are under charter with Shell Trading (US) Company. Intrepid Personnel and Provisioning is the operating company for the Pennsylvania and Florida, and AMO represents all licensed officers aboard both tankers.

"American Maritime Officers is proud to be part of Crowley's continued commitment to the Jones Act fleet and the domestic industry," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "We welcome the new work and lasting opportunity for AMO members in the coastwise trades aboard the Florida and Pennsylvania."

Each of the Veteran Class tankers has a capacity of 330,000 barrels. At a length of approximately 600 feet (183.2 meters), the tankers are each 45,800 deadweight tons. Powered by the first Tier II large-bore engines, MAN-B&W 6S50MCs, the speed of the Pennsylvania and the Florida is expected to average 14.5-plus knots, Crowley reported. In addition to being double hulled with segregated ballast systems, safety features include water and CO2 firefighting systems, as well as a foam water spray system.

"Adding these new tankers to our fleet allows us to continue providing our customers with diverse and modern equipment to transport their petroleum and chemical products in a safe and reliable manner," said Crowley Maritime Corporation Chairman, President and CEO Tom Crowley. "I recall that one of my grandfather's missions for the company included making investments that would not only help the company grow, but also provide jobs for people, which is something we have carried on to this day, and why we continue to support the Jones Act and our U.S. shipbuilding partners, including Aker."
