New jobs for AMO members on 'Legacy Class' ATBs

Crowley Maritime Corporation in November christened the first of three 750 "Legacy" Class articulated tug/barge units, the M/V Legacy, for service in the Jones Act trades.

All ATBs in the Crowley Maritime fleet are operated under contract with the Seafarers International Union. American Maritime Officers has established a pass-through agreement with the SIU covering the three Legacy Class ATBs. Under the pass-through agreement, members of AMO with unlimited licenses are working aboard the M/V Legacy in licensed positions - deck and engine. AMO members will also have the ability to sail on the other two Legacy Class ATBs, which are now under construction.

"These ATBs are exceptional, state-of-the-art equipment and we're very pleased AMO and the SIU are working together with this agreement, providing AMO officers the opportunity to sail aboard Crowley's Legacy Class vessels," said AMO National Executive Vice President Bob Kiefer.

The M/V Legacy is operating under a long-term charter with Marathon Petroleum. The two other ATBs in the Legacy Class - the Legend/750-2 and Liberty/750-3 - will also operate in the U.S. coastwise trades carrying petroleum products. The Legacy Class ATBs have a capacity of 330,000 barrels each and can operate at speeds of 15-plus knots.
