STAR Center course updates: Upgrade Navigation, High Voltage Safety

STCW Upgrade Navigation course requirement changes: Effective June 1, 2008, the two-week STCW Upgrade Navigation course—the Advanced Navigation requirement for the chief mate (management level) upgrade program—is being reduced to a duration of one week.  As a part of their approval of the revised curriculum, the U.S. Coast Guard now requires upgrade candidates to complete the five-day Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS) course within 12 months of the new one-week Upgrade Navigation course. This new requirement only applies if you take the one-week Upgrade Navigation course.  Anyone who took the two-week Upgrade Navigation course does not have a requirement to complete an ECDIS course.

To assist AMO members and applicants in completing both the STCW Navigation and ECDIS courses, additional ECDIS course dates have been scheduled to coincide with the first week of the former two-week class.  Priority in these ECDIS classes will be afforded to those in the management level upgrade program.  The new one-week class will be scheduled concurrent with the second week of the old course.

For registration or questions with the new requirements, please contact Student Services at (800) 942-3220 Extension 7109 or 7112.

High Voltage Safety: High Voltage Safety training is one of the preferred courses for qualification to sail in the international LNG fleets.  The next three-day class at STAR Center's Dania Beach location is scheduled to start on Monday, July 28.  Slots remain available for eligible AMO members and applicants. To register, please contact Student Services at (800) 942-3220 Extension 7109 or 7112.
